A small town, just 20 kilometers from Thessaloniki, hides a pleasant surprise and a good reason for a short getaway. Halastra, with its unique central square and the presence of the remarkable La Piazza Restaurant & Pub, with very good cocktails and carefully prepared culinary suggestions, proves that quality entertainment is not the exclusive privilege of large urban centers.
The unwritten rule dictates that nightlife and entertainment are almost exclusively concentrated in big cities, leaving smaller towns and villages with limited options. Halastra, however, comes to challenge this certainty.
The first question that naturally arises is why a resident or visitor of Thessaloniki would travel 20 kilometers when the city offers a plethora of high-quality restaurants, taverns, and bars. The answer lies in the atmosphere of Halastra itself and, primarily, in its large central square. It is a public space that in no way resembles the large and often impersonal squares of Thessaloniki. The scene almost spontaneously evokes other eras: low buildings that allow the space to «breathe,» groups of people chatting calmly, a few but well-placed trees, and, above all, children playing freely, creating a sense of vibrancy rarely found in modern cities.
The cherry on top of this almost nostalgic image is the La Piazza Restaurant & Pub, which is the main landmark of the square and the primary reason to be here. If it were located on a side street in Rome, it could easily be characterized as a modern trattoria with strong bar elements. However, because it is located in Halastra and not in the Italian capital, it is worth seeing what makes it so special.
The experience begins in the square itself. On sunny days, a table outside is enough to understand the charm of the spot. In our opinion, this sense of tranquility alone justifies the short trip from Thessaloniki. After all, the distance from the city center does not exceed half an hour. The interior of La Piazza follows warmer tones. The dim but adequate lighting creates an intimate atmosphere, while the well-designed bar emphasizes the dual nature of the space as a restaurant and cocktail bar.
The audience is particularly eclectic. Younger people, groups of friends, families, and older visitors coexist harmoniously, creating a friendly and unpretentious environment. It's characteristic that even people who don't usually visit places with a strong bar culture feel completely comfortable here.
Perhaps the biggest surprise at La Piazza is the quality of the cocktails. In a place far from the entertainment center of Thessaloniki, one would expect a limited list of a few classic options. On the contrary, both the classic cocktails and the signature creations that Evangelos Tsiaousis is in charge. present particular interest and a high level of execution.
An exceptionally balanced Manhattan, as well as several original suggestions from the bar, prove that La Piazza can stand proudly alongside notable cocktail bars in the center of Thessaloniki.
In terms of cuisine, the menu is primarily based on pasta and pizza, offering several options and particularly satisfying execution. At the same time, it includes some appetizers and a few classic dishes, catering to different preferences and occasions. The overall impression does not suggest Michelin-style fine dining, nor is that the establishment's goal. However, those who choose to visit will find a successful combination of good food, quality cocktails, and an atmosphere that is hard to find so close to Thessaloniki.
And if to all of this is added the unique feeling of Halastra's square, then the excursion gains even greater value.
